Endodontic Treatment

Root Canal Treatment

Root CanalA root canal is a common endodontic treatment for a tooth containing a damaged nerve. This damage typically originates from decay, a broken tooth, infection, a large filling, or trauma. Once the nerve is compromised to the point it cannot heal itself, a root canal may be the only treatment to save the tooth from extraction.

Root canal therapy removes the affected nerve tissue, and cleans and disinfects the inside of the tooth so it can be restored. After your root canal, a permanent restoration is needed to restore missing tooth structure, seal off the endodontic treatment, and support the tooth to withstand normal biting forces. This last step is important, otherwise the tooth may decay or break and end up needing to be extracted.
